The following are some of the frequently asked questions about cataract surgery.

Cataracts are the leading cause of correctable blindness.

You should have your cataracts removed when they are interfering with your quality of life. Driving, reading, shopping, knitting, enjoying movies, activities of daily living struggles and when your ophthalmologist recommends you would benefit from having them removed.

A cataract is a cloudiness that affects the natural lens of your eyes. Usually, cataracts develop over time. Their most apparent symptom is blurry vision. Cataracts are treated by replacing the cloudy lens of the eye with an artificial lens.

Cataract surgery poses just as much risk as any other surgery. However, the risk of complications is minimal, and it is the most common surgery in the United States.

During the surgery, your doctor will make a tiny incision through the cornea of your affected eye. They cut a circular hole at the front of the anterior capsule, which encloses your natural lens. After removing the lens, they replace it with an artificial implant to restore vision. Today’s technology gives patients the opportunity to select their postoperative vision.

Even though cataract surgery is safe, it may have a few side effects. Some of them include swelling, bleeding, and infection. However, they are all mild and can be managed with medication.
